Pig Peter and the RSLive mascot

Pig Peter (Russian: Поросёнок Пётр) is a recognisable character in Russian internet culture and emigration humour. RSLive adapted the character into its own mascot, Petar Otišić.

From children’s books to an internet meme

Pig Peter comes from books by Lyudmila Petrushevskaya illustrated by Alexander Reichstein. Three books about the character were published in 2002. Reichstein had moved from the Soviet Union to Finland in 1990.

During the 2000s the character moved from children’s literature into Russian internet culture. Parody books, poems, a song and an animated adaptation appeared. The best-known visual motif became a pig setting off on a tractor.

The story was easy to reinterpret as an emigration joke: a small character leaves a familiar place, travels elsewhere and tries to build a different life. This made Pig Peter compatible with the Russian expression roughly meaning “time to get out”, and the image was adopted by people and communities discussing relocation.

Why RSLive uses the character

RSLive began as a practical encyclopedia for people moving to Serbia and trying to understand local procedures, institutions and everyday life. Pig Peter was a recognisable piece of Russian cultural context for part of that audience, so the project retained the joke but adapted it to Serbia.

The RSLive version is called Petar Otišić. The surname is a wordplay on the Serbian verb otići — “to leave” or “to go away”.

An early version preserved the tractor from the Russian meme. After consultation with Serbian readers, RSLive replaced it with an aeroplane. In Serbia, a red tractor is strongly associated with the refugee columns during the 1995 Operation Oluja and therefore has a historical meaning that is very different from the Russian internet joke.

The resulting character is not intended to represent Serbia or Serbian culture. It represents the migration history and self-irony of the project itself: departure is only the first part of the story; arrival, adaptation and learning how the new country works are what RSLive is about.

From mascot to sticker pack

Petar and related pig characters now appear throughout the RSLive visual identity. The project uses them in a large sticker collection covering documents, housing, work, transport, food, holidays and other situations in Serbia.
